Windows 7 Service Pack 1 has been released by Microsoft for some time now. A cursory look at changes pushed in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 suggests that it is, for the most part – a new feature plus bunch of bug fixes.

The new feature in Service Pack 1 is RemoteFX, an enhancement to RDP that is available in Hyper-V hosted virtual machines running Windows 7 SP1 and above. RemoteFX essentially bridges the feature gap between what was possible in RDP and VDI offerings from ISVs. There is quite a lot of changes behind the scenes and RemoteFX does not seem like a small feature by any means.

Administrators will probably note presence of RemoteFX when Windows 7 SP1 Windows Firewall sets up a new inbound rule6 for Remote Desktop RemoteFX when they the host is configured for remote desktop access. That rule is in addition to the port 3389 inbound rule for good old Remote Desktop like shown below.

The new eventlog enums in SP1 are as under

Microsoft-Windows-RPC-Proxy/Debug
Microsoft-Windows-RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS/Admin
Microsoft-Windows-RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS/Operational
microsoft-windows-RemoteDesktopServices-RemoteDesktopSessionManager/Admin
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ClientUSBDevices/Admin
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ClientUSBDevices/Analytic
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ClientUSBDevices/Debug
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ClientUSBDevices/Operational
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ServerUSBDevices/Admin
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ServerUSBDevices/Analytic
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ServerUSBDevices/Debug
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ServerUSBDevices/Operational
